Rain and storms couldn’t dampen the mood as the Fighting Irish downed the Demon Deacons to keep their sensational season going and setup a marquee showdown next weekend in South Beach.
Many Monogram winners were on hand for the Wake Forest weekend festivities, which included reunions for the baseball and men’s basketball programs.
Here’s a look back at the weekend…
On Friday evening, the Knute Rockne “Spirit of Sports” Awards Celebration was held at Palais Royale in downtown South Bend. The following Monogram winners were honored at the event:
Champion Award: Ryan Harris (’07, football)
Courage Award: Rocky Bleier (’68, football)
Perseverance Award: Mike Oriard (’70, football)
Humanitarian Award: Dan Harshman (’68, football)
Innovation Award: Tom Reynolds (’69, football)
Loyalty Award: Brian Boulac (’63, football)
Service Award: Roger Valdiserri (’54, honorary)
Lifetime Legend Award: Ara Parseghian (honorary)
Several men’s basketball Monogram winners returned to campus to attend a memorial Mass for Fighting Irish legend Tommy Hawkins (’59, basketball), who passed away in August. The program also hosted a reunion that brought together the many eras of Notre Dame basketball. The attendees were able to watch the current squad defeat Bethel College in exhibition action on Friday evening.
The Fighting Irish baseball program also held a reunion for its alums and recognized milestone anniversaries for both of its College World Series teams. The 1957 and 2002 teams celebrated the 60th and 15th anniversaries, respectively, of those magical campaigns.
Monogram Club members once again filled the Monogram Room for the pre-game reception. Along with enjoying food, drink and fellowship, it was a great way to beat the storms that rolled through South Bend prior to the game.
Fighting Irish teams also enjoyed success away from campus over the weekend…
