Just when the student-athletes in Notre Dame’s class of 2017 thought they were done with weather delays and re-scheduling of events, rain visited campus during graduation weekend. Luckily the University of Notre Dame’s 172nd Commencement Ceremony was pushed back just one hour and still took place Sunday morning inside Notre Dame Stadium.
Weather wasn’t a factor on Saturday when the Monogram Club welcomed athletics graduates, their families, friends, coaches and administrators to the sixth annual Fourth Quarter Farewell, which was held inside the Guglielmino Athletics Complex. This event has become a staple on commencement weekend as it provides members of the athletics family a chance to gather one final time before the hectic pace of the weekend takes over.
Notre Dame Senior Deputy Athletics Director Missy Conboy (’82, basketball) spoke on behalf of the athletics department. It was fitting to have Conboy address the group since she could relate to both the graduates and the parents in attendance. During her speech Conboy relayed some advice that her daughter, Darby (’16, tennis), said she has learned since her graduation last May. Conboy also reinforced how special it is to be a member of the Notre Dame family.
“The Fourth Quarter Farewell is an opportunity to thank your parents and your families for entrusting their sons and daughters to us for the last four years,” said Conboy to the crowd. “It also is a chance to thank our graduating student-athletes for taking advantage of everything the University of Notre Dame has had to offer you and for bringing honor and prestige to our University. Finally, it’s a great chance to remind you what we promised you four years ago, which is that Notre Dame is not a four-year experience, it’s a 40 or 60-year experience. I hope you know that we’re about to deliver on that promise.”
Someone who has maximized her four years at Notre Dame is Eva Niklinska (’17, fencing). Along with being part of the national championship fencing squad, Niklinska received numerous academic and community accolades during her time at Notre Dame. One such honor was the Monogram Club Postgraduate Scholarship, which she’ll put to use when she attends medical school at Vanderbilt University. Niklinska, a Dean’s List student every semester of her Notre Dame career, addressed her fellow graduates at the Fourth Quarter Farewell.
“We’ve given our hearts, our souls, our blood, our sweat and our tears on the strips, the courts, the fields and what we got in return was a family, a sisterhood, a brotherhood, a home,” said Niklinska.
The Monogram Club and the Notre Dame Athletics Department once again were proud to distribute commencement stoles so the graduates could proudly don the Monogram one more time.
Here’s a look back at graduation weekend 2017…
Four years later, by virtue of a series of small miracles, the boys are officially graduates of the University of Notre Dame… In the immortal words of The Boss, "it's a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win" (Except Notre Dame is the opposite of that, and I'm staying for a 5th year) #SurviveAndAdvance 🍀🤓
