Letter Jacket Look Back

Nov 6, 2013, 8:28 AM EDT

Football student-athletes Nicky Baratti, Romeo Okwara and KeiVarae Russell earned their first Monograms at the 2013 spring ceremony.

Aside from moving into a new office, setting up my computer, and rearranging some furniture, I’m pretty sure helping with the letter jacket ceremony was the first meaningful task I did as a member of the Monogram Club staff.

Literally. I started April 1, and the ceremony was held on April 3.

Even though I was new to the Monogram Club, and only just starting to understand what it means to be a Monogram winner, it did not take long for me to appreciate the impactful ceremony. From the smiling student-athletes trying on their jackets in the Purcell Pavilion lobby to the proud parents snapping photos up in Club Naimoli, it almost felt like a commencement weekend event—the pride in calling oneself a “Monogram winner” much the same as adding “Notre Dame graduate” to one’s résumé.

This evening, the Monogram Club will celebrate the accomplishments of more than 100 student-athletes at the 2013 fall letter jacket ceremony. Monogram Club president Haley Scott DeMaria (’95, swimming) will emcee the event, with keynote remarks from Scott Paddock (’90, basketball), and a student-athlete reflection by Forrest Johnson (’14, baseball).

The letter jacket ceremony is certainly a special event, and we look forward to sharing the best photos, videos and tweets here on the blog in the coming days. In the meantime, here are a few stories you should read:
