The Sounds of 1988

Oct 16, 2013, 10:46 AM EDT

In 1988, Kevin Arnold and Winnie Cooper made baby boomers nostalgic for their adolescence, Tom Cruise met his brother Dustin Hoffman and Jack Buck could not believe what he saw at Dodger Stadium (25 years ago yesterday, actually).

The Kansas Jayhawks cut down the nets for their second NCAA championship, and on the football field, Lou Holtz led Notre Dame to a perfect 12-0 season.

This weekend, more than 50 members of that 1988 Fighting Irish squad will return to campus to celebrate 25 years since their memorable national title. It is sure to be a fun weekend, and of course, every great celebration needs great music, so we’ve prepared by compiling some of the best tunes of ’88.

Earlier this fall, you may have seen similar blogs for the 1973 and 1957 reunions, but it’s safe to say neither of those are quite like this one. And no matter how many 80’s hits Coach Gumpf featured on her softball playlist, you’ve still probably never seen so many hair bands or heard as much synth as you will below.

From the King of Pop to Notre Dame football dad Jon Bon Jovi, here are 35 songs from the 1988 Billboard year-end list. If you have a Spotify account, you can click here to listen, or check it out embedded on the bottom of the page.
